There is a lot of disagreement when it comes to firearms. However, there is one topic that almost no one disagrees with: the importance of firearms safety training. From learning to shoot a .22-caliber rifle as a youth to learning responsible draw-and-fire practices for a concealed handgun, the need for safety training is universally accepted.
Report Says Untrained Gun Owners are Ineffective
We could debate back and forth about whether or not safety and live-fire training should be a legally-required phase of the concealed-carry permit process, but there is a difference between legal mandate and personal responsibility.
A study from Mount St. Mary’s and the National Gun Victims Action Council found that “training is paramount” for the proper use of firearms in an emergency situation.
If Your Going to Carry, Complete as Much Training as Possible
There’s no legal mandate saying you have to be a good parent (which is, of course, impossible to define), but everyone in our culture recognizes that it’s the right thing to do. In the same regard, having in-person concealed-carry training may or may not be legally required by your state, but it’s the right thing to do.
Even if you can obtain your concealed-carry permit with little more than filling out a form, you should complete safety training and live-fire training. In the end, this will make you a more responsible and reliable handgun owner. You’ll be a stronger ambassador for concealed-carry rights, and have a better chance at stopping a threat to you or your family.
