Hi, I’m Austin Davis, Director of Training for Concealed Coalition. You as Concealed Coalition members send me questions. Today’s question is about police pistols, specifically “What pistols do police use?”
What pistols the police use depends on a lot of factors. And since there are about 18,000 federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in the United States, there’s not one universal answer.
Different Departments, Different Police Pistols
Some departments or agencies issue one type of handgun to all their officers. Some agencies allow the officer to choose from several options from the same brand, or a selection of brands. Some even allow officers to buy their choice of police pistol from an approved list of handguns. Still other agencies restrict the caliber, but not the gun.
Finding the Perfect Police Pistol
I think an interesting question – one that many officers seem to find endless debate on – is what exactly is the perfect police pistol?
The perfect police pistol depends on whether you’re on patrol, in a special unit, or in an administrative role. Add in the potential factor of non-standard hand size, and the choices could be endless!
A good question is if you’re going to be a law enforcement officer in today’s environment, what pistol would you choose?
